As a part of its announcement, NARAL posted a video endorsement on YouTube. Throughout the day, the comments responding to the endorsement have degenerated from strong words to a full-on girl fight. Among the comments that are clean enough to print, here’s a sampler:

“You’re a disgrace for abandoning Hillary. You’re sickening.”

“What is SICKENING is how you Hillary supporters are acting. Just because hillary is a FEMALE doesnt mean that this organization has to endorse a FEMALE. Get over yourselves!! And besides, its all about pro-choice isnt it?”

“This is a comment to announce I’m disgusted with NARAL and I want my dues back. You choose to support Obama, who voted “present” on important pro-choice/pro-family planing issues and who is a meek & weak candidate…who refuses to answer questions or debate & calls professional women “sweetie”?

“Listed (sic.) sweetie, Obama is our next president, and if you have a problem with Naral endorsing him then go vote for McCain.”

Yikes. Even though Clinton and Obama will certainly be able to work together after the primaries are over, the same cannot be said for their supporters.

As a public service, we’d like to refer these ladies to the CJP interview with Anna Post, great-great-granddaughter of Emily Post, about how to talk politics without losing your friends. Our favorite piece of advice: ““When you are talking about politics, know what your purpose is..Are you just there to vent, to dump on somebody? That’s neither productive nor helpful to your own cause.”

Ouch. But the same poll showed that John McCain has real strength as a presidential nominee in an otherwise tough year for Republicans.

In a head-to-head match between McCain and Obama, the poll found:

Among voters, more people call themselves “moderate” (39%), than call themselves “conservative” (35%) or liberal (24%).

McCain wins on dealing with terrorism by 21%.

McCain wins on “leadership” and having “the right experience to be president.”

Obama wins as the right candidate for change.

Obama beats McCain by 20% as having “a vision for the future.”

It’s that last number that McCain addressed yesterday with what’s being called the “Chrystal Ball” speech, laying out his vision for what 2013 would look like in the last year of what would be his first term. You can see the full Washington Post poll HERE, and the full speech HERE.

Today we’ve got important news on politics, airplanes and the price of oil, but is it wrong that the thing we really care about is the royal wedding tomorrow? Even though the Winsdors haven’t had many happy endings lately, hope has been huge in 2008, so maybe this round of weddings will stick. And even if they don’t, everybody loves a bride.

Get ready to be the go-to gals at the water cooler today. Here’s your Morning Jane…

Top Domestic Story: Campaign 2008

During a speech to the Israeli parliament, President Bush compared anyone who would negotiate with “terrorists and radicals” to an American senator who was a Nazi appeaser. Another American senator, Barack Obama, took offense to the comparison, since he has advocated meeting with Iran’s president. Joe Biden’s response: “That’s bullsh*t!” [New York Times]

John McCain gave what’s being called his “Chrystal Ball” speech yesterday, looking to the last year of his first term to see what’s he’s accomplished. Most significant: “America has welcomed home most of the servicemen and women who have sacrificed terribly so that American might secure her freedom.” For the full speech, click HERE.

After touring a Detroit auto plant, Barack Obama rushed past a reporter asking for a comment on the auto industry and said, “Hold on one second, sweetie, we’re going to do — we’ll do a press avail.” When the press conference failed to materialize, local ABC reporter Peggy Agar went on air and said “this sweetie” never got the story. [Washington Times]

Top International Story: In addition to the suffering it’s caused in China, the earthquake there has sent global oil prices to a new high of $127/ barrel on speculation that China will need to import more oil. Although President Bush is in Saudi Arabia today to talk about controlling the price of crude, the days of America being the biggest player in the game may be over. [BBC]

Even though gas costs an arm and a leg, driving around on “empty” is not a good habit for you, and airline pilots say it’s not a good habit for them either. Although all planes carry the FAA minimum, twenty pilots have filed complaints that they don’t have enough gas to circle in case there’s a delay at the airport where they’re headed. YIKES. [USA Today]

A double-amputee from South Africa has won his appeal to compete against able-bodied athletes in the 400 meter run at the Olympic trials. He had originally been banned from the competition because of a ruling that his prosthetic legs gave him “an unfair advantage.” [Times of London]

So the real news today: Tomorrow is the big day for Princess Anne’s son, Peter Philips and his bride-to-be, Canadian Autumn Kelly. In addition to the event itself, which is the first wedding of this generation of royals, Kate Middleton will go in Prince William’s place, and Chelsea Davy will meet Queen Elizabeth for the first time. Why are we so excited?

If you’re using Firefox or another browser, pardon our dust while we finish working out the kinks in our redesign- we’re almost there. But since we all know it’s what’s on the inside that really counts, here’s your Morning Jane…

Top Domestic Story: Campaign 2008

Barack Obama picked up two big endorsements yesterday: John Edwards and NARAL Pro-Choice America, the country’s largest pro-choice group. NARAL said that both Clinton and Obama have a 100% pro-choice record, but that Obama is the one “whom we believe will secure the Democratic nomination and advance to the general election. ” [ABC]

John McCain will say today that he believes he will bring the majority of troops home from Iraq by the end of his first term as president, and that combat operations will be over by 2013. By then, “The United States maintains a military presence there, but a much smaller one, and it does not play a direct combat role.” [L.A. Times]

Hillary Clinton took her case to the remaining superdelegates yesterday, saying she will stay in the race through the last primaries, and telling first-term Democrats that she won 16 out of 20 of their districts. Said one supporter, “She’s done well in rural districts, and that makes you think these Blue Dogs would be a natural fit.” [The Hill]

Top International Story: China warned that the earthquake that hit the country may have killed as many as 50,000 people. As Chinese troops mobilized to continue the search for the missing and help people left homeless, the government agreed to accept aid from rival Taiwan and Japan. [BBC]

House Republicans have rolled out a splashy new slogan to woo back voters: “The Change You Deserve.” Unfortunately, that’s the trademarked tag line of Effexor, an anti-depressant. Having fun at the Republicans’ expense, Steney Hoyer put the side effects of Effexor on a flat screen TV, including, “Nausea, up to 58 percent. Actually it’s higher than that for Republicans.” [Dana Milbank for the Washington Post]

The Department of the Interior announced that the polar bear will be protected by the Endangered Species Act because its habitat of sea ice is melting. But the Secretary of the Interior added that it would be “wholly inappropriate” to use the designation as a reason to reduce greenhouse gases. Totally. [New York Times]

Victoria Beckham tells the world what all women know, “I just can’t concentrate in flats.” [Daily Mail]

Above and beyond all the slicing, dicing and guesswork of who would for whom in November, his list of one and a half million-plus donors makes him the most formidable candidate in the race of either party.

We were fascinated, then, to see that in place of the usual fundraising appeal on BarackObama.com, he is raising money for disaster victims. He links supporters directly to the American Red Cross, where the nonprofit is raising money for the China earthquake and the Myanmar cyclone.

Considering the lengths most politicians will go to for donations, it’s not just politics as usual at BO.com…

There’s a fine line between not taking “No” for an answer, and not taking a hint, but luckily we’re not in charge of those kinds of judgments. We’re just in charge of giving you all the news you need to be the smartest women deciding when to bow out gracefully and when to gracefully land a blow. Here’s your Morning Jane…

Top Domestic Story: Campaign 2008

Hillary Clinton won big last night in West Virginia, with a 67% to 28% rout over Barack Obama. In her victory speech, Clinton said her posse of wins in swing states like West Virginia, Florida and Michigan would make her the best nominee in the fall. The DNC will decide the actual fate of Michigan and Florida at a May 31 meeting. [Charleston Gazette]

Muscogee, Ok., previously best known for being the hometown of the best friend in “An Officer and a Gentleman,” has elected the country’s youngest mayor. John Tyler Hammons, a 19-year-old freshman at OU, swept to victory with 70% of the vote. Hammons will stay in college, but says he may transfer to a school closer to his new job. [AP]

We told you the Republicans might hit the panic button if they lost the Mississippi House race yesterday. Consider the panic button hit. Travis Childers, the Democrat, ran as a pro-life, pro-gun conservative, and cruised to a 54-46 win. A poli-sci professor called it “a huge upset, and an indication of a terrible year ahead for the Republicans.” [New York Times]

Top International Story: As Chinese officials work feverishly to find survivors of the massive earth quake that hit that country, the military government of Myanmar sealed off their own cyclone disaster zone to keep out all outside aid. An unnamed correspondent for the BBC said that one devastated village of 400 people had received just one bag of rice from the government so far. [BBC]

Three men have been sentenced to 15 years in prison for plotting to kill George Bush during his 2006 visit to Jordan. Authorities arrested the men the day before Bush arrived, when they had planned to bomb the American embassy with Bush inside. Yikes. [AP via USA Today]

A new study of 65,000 women revealed that those who exercised when they were teenagers were 23% less likely to develop premenopausal breast cancer. Even if you spent your youth watching “Days of Our Lives” instead of going to lacrosse practice, do pass this on to the teens in your life. [USA Today]

In our lowest moments, we sometimes watch re-runs of “The Real Housewives of New York City.” In their lowest moments, the Real Housewives of New York City act like this… [NY Post]
