Rick Santorum, GOP Ladies’ Man

Topic: Women in Politics | By Patricia Murphy | February 26, 2012

The conventional wisdom has told us that women of nearly all political stripes would turn against Rick Santorum after weeks of news about his opposition to contraception.

But a new Washington Post polls shows us that the opposite is true, at least for Republican women.   The poll shows that the former Pennsylvania senator is surging with those ladies, with his approval rating jumping to 57% from 44% in  the last two weeks.  Mitt Romney’s favorability numbers have gone in the same time frame, but he still tops all the other candidates with 61%.

Conservative women at Santorum’s events tell us they not only like his policies, but they like him as a person, calling him a devoted father and husband and all around good guy.   One told us, “People see there’s a real human being there who gets up every morning and works hard and tries to do the right thing…You could do a lot worse than having a husband or a son-in-law or a president like Rick Santorum.”

Not all women will feel that way, of course, and Santorum would probably be hurt among independent women in a general election specifically because of his positions on social issues.

But the idea that all women have bolted from Santorum is just not right.   Read more interviews with conservative women at the Daily Beast and the full poll at The Washington Post.
