Staffers on Capitol Hill are buzzing about Sports Illustrated’s newest cover girl, 19-year-old Kate Upton, who, in addition to to being the most famous swimsuit model in the world today, is also the niece of Rep. Fred Upton, a Republican congressman from Michigan.
Rep. Upton is well-known on the Hill as the chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, which oversees the country’s energy policy and business regulations. He was also a member of the ill-fated “Super Committee,” the bi-partisan group that was supposed to come up with a whiz bang proposal this summer to cut the country’s deficit, but deadlocked before they could even propose any ideas.
Until today, Rep. Upton’s claims to fame were co-authoring the bill that added three weeks of daylight savings time to the calendar (meaning more long days- thanks, Rep. Upton!)) and being the grandson of the co-founder of Whirlpool, one of the first American companies to offer paid vacations. But after today, we’re pretty sure he’ll just be known as Kate Upton’s uncle.
