RNC Chairman Michael Steele is learning the hard way that it’s hard to change a party when not everyone in the party thinks it needs to change.
His latest lesson came yesterday when GQ posted an interview with Steele, in which the chairman called abortion “an individual choice.” In response, one high-level Republican said, “Chairman Steele, as the leader of America’s Pro-Life conservative party, needs to re-read the Bible, the U.S. Constitution, and the 2008 GOP Platform. He then needs to get to work — or get out of the way.” Geeze.
CJP is sure Steele has read the bible more than once, since he joined the seminary for three years. Other things we learned about him from GQ:
- He was adopted from a Catholic orphanage. His adoptive father abused his mother, and died when Steele was four;
- He’s a fan of Grand Master Flash and “wasn’t feelin’” Michelle Obama’s inaugural gown;
- He’s got opinions you’ve never heard from an RNC chair:
- On the party’s lack of appeal to minorities: “We have offered them nothing! And the impression we’ve created is that we don’t give a damn about them or we just outright don’t like them;”
- On homosexuality: “It’s your nature, I can’t change your nature.”
- On abortion: Q: “Are you saying you think women have the right to choose abortion? A: “Yeah. I mean, again, I think that’s an individual choice.” (He explains states should decide the issue.)
GQ’s full interview is well worth the read, and you can find it HERE.
