Most Americans know David Axelrod is President Obama’s right-hand man, but few know that his wife, Susan (at left with daughter Lauren), founded and is now the president of CURE, a non-profit organization focused on finding a cure for epilepsy. The Axelrods’ adult daughter, Lauren, was diagnosed with epilepsy at seven-months old and suffered permanent developmental disabilities as a result. Their story of Lauren’s struggle with seizures and how the disease has affected their family is HERE.
As President Obama announced his executive order lifting the ban on federal funding of embryonic stem cell research today, Susan Axelrod was there in the East Room under the auspices of CURE. The group has raised $9 million for research to cure epilepsy and is currently working with the Department of Defense on research into the link between traumatic brain injury and epilepsy. CURE says that many soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with TBI will suffer from epilepsy as a result.
