Amendment-a-Day: #10By CJP | February 20, 2009
Today, we turn your attention to the famous 10th Amendment. Not ringing any bells, ladies? Not to worry- here it is: “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.” Amendment #10 is short, sweet and the basis for conservatives’ potent rallying cry of “states’ rights.” We thought about the 10th Amendment today as the “Washington Times” reported that some Republican governors are pushing back against the stimulus package as it’s crafted, saying that the feds can give the states money, but they can’t tell them what to do with it. An Arizona Republican is even trying to pass a measure in the state legislature called, “Sovereignty: the 10th Amendment,” explaining, “We are telling the federal government that we are a sovereign state and want to be treated as such. We are not a branch of the federal government.” She says she’s protesting federal expansion under both President Obama and President Bush. We think we’ll be hearing about the 10th Amendment in the future, and now the Janes know what it is… |

Loyal Janes know CJP likes to take an occasional tour of the Bill of Rights based on what’s happening in the news, thinking that you can’t fight for your rights if you don’t even know what they are.
