Top Domestic Story: The Big Three CEOs testify to Congress again today, asking for more than the $25 billion they had proposed two weeks ago. With the news that Congress may prefer bankruptcy over a bailout, the Detroit Free Press writes an editorial, “Hey America, It’s a Loan! L-O-A-N.” Top International Story: U.S. envoys are urging Pakistan to change the focus of its military efforts from preparing for war with India to battling Islamist terrorists training within its own borders. One American official said Pakistan, “is supportive of the Taliban in Afghanistan; it’s skeptical of the war on terror and thinks it’s a war against Islam. That has to change.” [BBC] PA Gov. Ed Rendell is taking serious heat for whispering next to an open mic that AZ Gov. Janet Napolitano will be “perfect” as Sec. of Homeland Security because, “Janet has no family. Perfect. She can devote, literally, 19-20 hours a day to it.” Oh boy. Gail Collins of the NYT has her way with Rendell HERE. Insult, meet injury: Even though the value of homes is plummeting, property taxes are going up across the country. States typically structure property taxes so that they neither rise precipitously with a boom, nor fall in a bust. One tax man says the lag helps and hurts taxpayers, but, “Nobody complains when prices are rising.” [USA Today] As D.C. hotels jack up their rates to $500/night for inauguration week, one man has put up $1 million to rent out 300 rooms and the ballroom as a part of the downtown Marriott’s “Build Your Own Ball” inauguration package. The guests for the pricey party? ”Terminally ill patients, wounded soldiers and others down on their luck” who will be invited, dressed, coiffed and fed by the donor’s personal foundation.[Washington Post] Shut UP.
