Ted Stevens celebrates his 85th birthday today, and as a special present, or maybe it's just a lucky coincidence, the Senate Republican caucus postponed today's vote to remove him from their ranks. Â Although his colleagues remain nonplussed by the senator's seven recent felony convictions, Sen. Jim DeMint agreed to put off the decision until the results of Sen. Stevens' re-election race are known. Â The final count could come as soon as today. Â Â
Even if Stevens is kicked out of the Republican caucus, he could still serve in Congress unless he's removed by a vote of the full Senate. Â Only a two-thirds vote could remove the senator from his seat, except losing his election this week, of course. Â
