Do you know what a “provisional ballot” is? You need to…

Gals, what if you get to the polls and you’re told that you are not registered to vote, even though you think you are? Do not leave. Just ask to cast a “provisional ballot.” You will get a ballot and vote as normal. Later, the Secretary of State’s office will receive your ballot and check to make sure you are actually registered. If everything is square, then your vote gets counted.

Provisional ballots are new since 2002, when Congress passed a bill to deal with the 2000 election mess.  Like any good election fix, provisional balloting can get confusing once the counting starts. While it’s clear that anyone can cast a provisional ballot, it’s unclear how they get counted, since each state has its own rules about that. But never you mind.  The best way not to get your vote counted is not to vote at all. So vote early today ladies, and if you live in Texas, vote often.

Provisional balloting exists in all 50 states and the territories, so no matter where you live, you can cast a provisional ballot.
