Continuing our series on the top 10 hottest Senate races to watch around the country, today we bring you number 9: Georgia!
The Georgia Senate race has been one that the media has been talking about for a while. Georgia has long been heralded as a GOP stronghold, a safe bet for McCain, and Obama pulled many of his resources from the state when he wasn't getting traction over the summer. Â However, the Senate race in the Peach state has been far more interesting. An unlikely Democratic challenger, former state representative Jim Martin, is generating a lot of buzz because he may just unseat the one-term Republican incumbent, Saxby Chambliss.
The interesting twist to the Georgia Senate race is that Georgia is currently the only state where a Senate victory is defined as 50 percent plus one vote. And polls currently indicate that neither candidate may achive that, meaning this race may be headed for a run-off, and 28 extra days of campaigning past November 4th. Months ago, Chambliss was considered the sure favorite, but many polls now consider the race a toss-up.
Can the Georgia Democrats take back a Senate seat that they've been fuming over since they lost it in 2002? Can the Republicans hang on to this crucial seat while holding off Jim Martin's campaign and the massive numbers of voters being registered in the state by the Obama campaign? We'll definitely be keeping our eye on this one!
