Good morning Janes! Between the screaming business-section headlines, the galloping rumors and the irate callers on our beloved C-SPAN, it's getting rough out there. But as anyone who has ever had a beauty treatment knows, sometimes the only way to Pretty is through Downtown Ugly.
So instead of thinking of the next year as a "recession," why not consider it an "economic exfoliation," sloughing off the dead investment banks and debt-swappers so that a fresh, new economy can grow? Don't forget to moisturize, and don't forget your Morning Jane...
Top Domestic Story: The Economy
- The $700 billion bailout is bogged down on the Hill, with Rs and Ds complaining that the White House wants too much money for a measure nobody knows will work. Conservatives want the government out of the markets, while Ds want salaries slashed at companies that take the bailout. [Washington Post]
- Get out your popcorn! The fathers of the bailout will testify before the Senate Banking Committee at 9:30 a.m. to explain the deal and likely get an earful of righteous indignation from lawmakers, who obviously had nothing at all to do with this mess. Nothing at all. [C-SPAN]
Other Top Domestic Story: Campaign 2008
- Obama and McCain are waiting to see the final bailout before committing to it, but BOTH of them will have to come off the sidelines when it comes to the Senate for a vote. Both want more oversight and a limit on executive pay, but Obama wants a $115 billion stimulus, which McCain opposes. [WSJ]
- Best switch your popcorn for Prozac in November, when at least six scenarios could leave the election in a 269/ 269 tie. The results would then go to the House for the president, and the Senate for the VP, where Democrats would win, IF Joe Lieberman voted for Obama. But because he's already endorsed McCain, the vote would be 50-50, with the president of the Senate, Dick Cheney, casting the deciding vote.  [Washington Times]
Top International Story: President Bush and the new Pakistani president, Asif Ali Zardari, will meet this week at the U.N. General Assembly to discuss the growing political tensions in Pakistan and Bush's controversial decision to send U.S. troops into Pakistan without Zardari's permission. [BBC]
The New York TImes discovers what the Janes have known all along: "The View" is one hot, messy, addictive stew of political girl talk. This year the gals have landed the biggest guests in politics and peppered them with the questions mere reporters couldn't get past the campaign handlers.

Hey
Any truth to Sarah Palin having an affair with her husband’s business partner?
