    Tuesday Morning Jane

    By CJP | September 16, 2008

Good morning, Janes! The party on Wall Street's over, the hangover's starting to set in and somebody broke the crystal egg on your parents' mantel in the process. We're not really sure how that happened, but we'll stick around to help clean up if you want. But first, drink some water, take two aspirin, lick a Tobasco-soaked olive (it works) and read this, it's the Morning Jane.... Top Domestic Story: The Markets
    • Even though the markets had their worst trading day since September 11, the trouble's not over. AIG, the biggest insurance company in America, is being called "the other shoe," after losing 60% of its stock value yesterday and the federal government said it won't be bailing anyone else out. [NY Post]
    • The local economies of London and New York stand to suffer more than any others as thousands of brokers and bankers trade bonuses for pink slips. At the Thomas Pink store on Wall St., the owner says he expects to take a hit, but "maybe they'll be buying more interview shirts?" [Wall Street Journal]
    • One sliver of good news: CNBC reports, "Everyone is selling everything in commodities." That means prices of oil, heating oil and natural gas will drop, and gasoline "could go as low as $3 per gallon." CJP loves a market-based correction.
Other Top Domestic Story: Both campaigns jumped yesterday to blame somebody for the Wall Street meltdown: Obama said it was the "failed policies of George W. Bush," while McCain blamed, "self-interest, greed, irresponsibility and corruption." Neither one had specific fixes to offer, but we'll be watching for them today and keep you posted. [USA Today] Top International Story: Civilian killings in Afghanistan have soared since last year, according to the UN's High Commission for Refugees. The number of Afghans killed in the crossfire between the Taliban and NATO troops have increased 39% since last year and is the worst since fighting began in 2001. [BBC] The FDA will hold a hearing today on BPA, the chemical that makes plastic shatterproof and is found in plastic bottles, linings of canned foods, baby bottles and dozens of daily use products. The feds say BPA is perfectly safe, but a new study says it causes heart disease, diabetes and some kinds of cancer. Yikes! [Washington Post] If you need an escape from all this reality tonight, why not spend 60 minutes at Bravo with Rachel Zoe, the stylist whom the New York TImes calls "a pox on humanity" and charges clients $7,000 a day to help them dress like hobos. We're so there.
