    Friday Morning Jane

    By CJP | August 22, 2008

Good morning, Janes! And congratulations- today is the last day of CJP summer school and you're all graduating! We'll have a formal commencement speech later today, but sit back now and bask in the glory of a job well done. Sure, we might have skipped some classes to get to our summer job, and yes, you might have asked your friends to take notes while you went to the beach, but isn't that what summer learning is all about? As we pack our bags to head off for Denver and St. Paul, why don't you get ready to be the smartest women in the CJP Summer School class of 2008? Here's your Morning Jane... Top Domestic Story: Campaign 2008
    • Barack Obama called members of his short list last night to tell them they're not the one, according to CNN. With a V.P. event planned for tomorrow in Illinois, he has to make an announcement today or tomorrow. Right?
    • A new study shows that no matter who wins, the federal deficit and federal debt will only get worse. Obama's tax cuts and new spending would grow the deficit to $317 billion, while McCain's huge tax cut package would kick it up to between $275 billion and $367 billion. The head of the study said, "What we found isn't great." [Washington Times]
    • Despite this week's pro-choice trial balloons, McCain sources say he's very unlikely to pick a #2 who bucks the establishment on abortion rights. They add that the top two #2s are pro-life (used to be pro-choice) Mitt Romney and pro-life, evangelical Christian Tim Pawlenty. [New York Times]
Top International Story: Condoleezza Rice and Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki have agreed to a plan that will take American troops off Iraqi city streets by next summer, and out of the country entirely by the end of 2011. CJP note: That's 18 months later than Obama's plan would bring them out, but more specific than McCain's plan. Does that take Iraq off the table? [New York Times] Investors, already jittery over Russia's move into Georgia, are pulling their money out of Russian markets, which had been surging up to now. One money man said, "Investors are realizing that the bear has put its paw on the pipeline, and geopolitical risk is likely to remain a theme for the next month or so." [BBC] Intel has unveiled wireless electricity, a development they call a "world changing event" that could eliminate electric cords, battery chargers, and even batteries. Intel is using magnetic fields because, "It turns out the human body is not affected by magnetic fields; it is affected by elective fields." Please double check that, Intel. We're concerned. [Agence France Presse] First Katie Holmes, now Jennifer Aniston. Is this really happening? [Daily Mail]

And so Jane….tell us about your convention plans. Are you hosting a hospitality suite? Will you be speaking on or off the platform? What are the best cocktail parties that we should crash? If we run into each other, will you buy us that drink that you promised in New Hampshire?
