Top Domestic Story: Campaign 2008

• The latest from the DNC convention: Michelle Obama will speak on the first night, Hillary Clinton will speak on the second, and a group of HRC supporters, known as the Denver Group, will protest the primary process throughout the week. No word yet on whether a roll call vote will include Clinton, but you just know the drama’s coming. [The Hill]
• Is John McCain planning a “One and Done” announcement at the Republican convention? When asked if McCain would promise to serve just one term, his campaign chairman refused to answer the question on Fox News Sunday. But McCain himself said in January, “’No, because I think then you’re the lame duck, you’re quacking on Inauguration Day, [Politico]
• Two men are being held in separate instances of threatening to assassinate Barack Obama. The man if Florida reportedly said, “If Barack Obama gets elected, I’ll assassinate him myself.” Yikes! [USA Today]

Top International Story: In addition to the human tragedy of the Russia/ Georgia crisis (more than 2,000 civilians have been killed), the economic reality of a compromised Georgia (and endangered oil pipeline there) pushed up the price of oil over the weekend. BP and other oil companies use that pipeline to transport oil out of Azerbaijan, which makes the West less dependent on supplies from Russia. [BBC]

Nearly 130,000 people in the Southern Philippines have fled their homes because of military clashes between the Army and Muslim rebels. The rebels want to expand a special Muslim autonomous zone, which the government opposes, and local Christians fear. [BBC]

A “Newsweek” writer gives a behind-the-scenes account of meeting John Edwards’ mistress on the campaign trail and knowing something was up. Jonathan Darman says, “The first time I laid eyes on Rielle Hunter, I could tell she was a story.”
