    By CJP | July 31, 2008

Good morning, Janes! We're running a little late today, but that doesn't me you should be. So we'll dispense with the pleasantries and get to it. Here's your Morning Jane... Top Domestic Story: Campaign 2008
    • As the McCain campaign tries to enforce message discipline, the one guy who's not going along with the gag is John McCain. After delivering a critique of Obama's Iraq plan at an event last week, he told a TV reporter that Obama's 16-month withdrawal plan seemed like a "pretty good timetable." [Washington Post]
    • Sources in the know say the Obama campaign plans to have Hillary Clinton speak on Tuesday night at the DNC Convention in Denver. For those playing along, the V.P. candidate traditionally speaks on Wednesday night. [CNN]
    • ABC News reports, "There is significant support among top McCain advisers that he make a "transformative" pick who would change the Republican Party -- someone who would appeal to moderate Republicans and Democrats." ABS says those advisers want... Sen. Joe Lieberman.
Top International Story: After Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert announced he would not run for reelection in September, Binyamin Netanyahu, the former PM and current opposition leader, said he wants snap elections because Israel can't afford a lame-duck Olmert. Stay tuned... [BBC] The number of illegal immigrants in the country has dropped 11% in the last year. A Census official says fewer jobs and a few highly publicized raids explain the drop. "You have just the natural phenomenon: One cop pulls over a speeder, and everyone else on the highway slows down." [Washington Times] If you liked the government shut-down in the 90s, you might have a treat in September. Republicans discussed a shut-down strategy at a GOP lunch yesterday, looking at the electoral pro's and con's of letting the federal budget run out. Sen. Jim Demint (R-SC) predicted, "The Democrats will probably want to play chicken." [The Hill] Dress shorts for men? Please no. [New York Times]
