Like many women’s magazines, “Vogue” puts out an “Age” issue once a year, almost as a way of making up for the other 11 months.
This year’s age issue (called the “Age(less) issue”) follows glamour all the way to the 90s, and guess who gets to be the ambassadress for the decade? Rule breaking, straight talking Roberta McCain, John McCain’s 96-year-old mother. In the Julia Reed-penned piece, we learn:
- Roberta currently drives a red BMW- LOVE IT;
- She has a twin sister, just like CJP, and they’re still best buds.
- She eloped at 19 to marry McCain’s father, a Navy ensign, in Tijuana, Mexico- a move so scandalous it was reported as, “Society Coed Elopes with Naval Officer; Roberta Wright Defies Family.”
- Her life as the wife of a Navy man took them across the world, living in Panama, Hawaii, London and elsewhere. “My eyes were just rolling around in my head life marbles I was so impressed with the people we were meeting,” she says;
- On John McCain’s fighter plane crash that led to his time as a POW: “This is life.”
- On Hillary Clinton: “I think the treatment they’ve given Hillary is just awful.”
- When she was told was too old to rent a car in Europe (she was 88), she bought a car instead. She just got a speeding ticket in it for doing 112 MPH in Arizona.
- Her motto is, “I’m happiest wherever I am right at that minute.”
