    Top Domestic Story:

    • John McCain will release 400 pages of his medical records tomorrow, including details of a surgery for melanoma and subsequent check ups for recurrences. Although the Friday before Memorial Day is usually reserved for releasing information a campaign wants to bury, McCain says, “There are going to be no surprises.” [New York Times]
    • Speaking of Mac, he has invited several rumored VP candidates, including Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, to a weekend BBQ. A LA Republican says having Jindal on the ticket would help the state, while a Democrats says, “He’s a politician’s politician. We’re a waste of this man’s talents.” The 36-year-old Jindal has been in office for five months. [Baton Rouge Advocate]
    • Also on the veep front, Barack Obama has officially, if discreetly, begun the process of finding his running mate. He’s given the vetting job to the same man who did the job for the Dems in 2004. No word yet on candidates.

    Top International Story: New Russian president Dmitry Medvedev is making his first official state visit and has chosen the oil-rich central Asian nation of Kazakhstan as his destination. Experts say his choice to head east rather than west reflects the priorities of his presidency and is likely the result of European efforts to limit Russian power westward. [BBC]

    Although Sen. Ted Kennedy is a frequent target in GOP campaign ads, Republican lawmakers are pondering the future without their most reliable partner for bi-partisan legislation. One Republican senator said, “He’s a legislator’s legislator. At the end of the day, he wants to legislate, he understands how, and he understands compromise.” [The Hill]

    The 17th Street Canal levee, which collapsed and caused much of the flooding in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, is leaking. Even though the feds have spent $22 million to repair the structure, the gooey soil beneath it has already allowed the levee to sink. At least one person isn’t worried: “I personally do not at all believe that this little wet spot is anything that is going to cause a breach or a failure of any kind.” That’s the guy who’s fixing it.
