Good morning, Janes! Our website couturier is making a few last-minute alterations on CJP's new outfit, so we are sticking our heads out of the dressing room for today's West Virginia primary. How could we stand behind a curtain while all the action's happening outside? If you'll forgive us for wearing the same thing for the last seven months in a row, we'll forgive you for whatever it is you need forgiving for (although we can't think of anything.) Here's your Morning Jane...
Top Domestic Story: Campaign 2008
- John McCain further outlined his plan to address global warming yesterday, and a "Washington Post" editorial declared it the beginning of a climate change in Washington (get it?). The Post gives McCain a nod of approval for his aggressive plan, saying, "At least on global warming, there will be no third term for the Bush administration."
- West Virginians go to the polls today, and Hillary Clinton is expected to win BIG. But the real race to watch may be in Mississippi, were a conservative Democrat threatens to win a district that George Bush carried with 62% of the vote in 2004. If this goes for the Dems on the heels of the recent Republican loss in Louisiana, R's will hit the 2008 panic button. [Houston Chronicle]
- Even as McCain gets praise from the left for distancing himself from George Bush, he's got a new headache on the right side of his brain. Bob Barr, of impeachment fame, announced his run for president as a Libertarian yesterday, chiding that McCain "cannot ever lay claim, at least with a straight face, to being a conservative." [Washington Times]
Top International Story: More than 12,000 people have been killed and 18,000 remain buried in rubble after a 7.9 earthquake hit China yesterday. Reports of organized chaos are coming in, with dazed survivors wandering the streets in their pajamas, while others speak with trapped relatives via cell phone. [BBC]
The latest controversy in Detroit is over who gets to kick text-messaging Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick out of office. The Detroit City Council today decides if they will remove him, censure him or ask Gov. Jennifer Granholm to intervene. Says one local pol, "I don't need a governor coming to Detroit, telling the people who elected somebody that he is not worthy of the office." [USA Today]
Charges have been dropped against pretty Anne Hathaway's Italian boyfriend, who bounced a check for $215,000 from an account that had $39.08 in it. Happens to the best of us! [NY Post]
