    Monday Morning Jane

    By CJP | May 5, 2008

Good morning, Janes! It’s graduation season at high schools and colleges across the country, a time of endings, beginnings, and non-breathable caps and gowns under a sweltering sun. So magical.

CJP was recently horrified to learn that our senior picture graced the front page of our high school newspaper during this year’s graduation week, realizing a long nurtured nightmare that the photo featuring a velvet cape and artfully teased bangs would haunt us into adulthood. Done and done.

But like the time CJP got suspended for excessive tardiness to homeroom, thus subjecting us to hard time with thieves and cheaters, we will use this personal challenge to become stronger, to realize our dreams more fully and to help you be the most informed Janes you can be. So get ready to be the smartest women commencing this week, made stronger by the trials of your past. Here’s your Morning Jane…

    Top Domestic Story: Campaign 2008

    • Guamanians caucused on Saturday and handed a razor-thin victory to Barack Obama. With more than 5,000 people voting, Obama beat Clinton by seven votes. Obama thanked the island for voting for change, while Clinton promised to push forward on local issues, including war reparations (huh?). [Pacific Daily News]
    • It’s down to the wire in North Carolina and Indiana, which both vote tomorrow. The latest polls show Obama up by 6.5% in North Carolina, while Clinton’s polling 4.5% ahead in the Hoosier state. Both need at least one win tomorrow to keep hope alive. If HRC loses both, cue the superdelegate stampede. [RealClearPolitics]
    • John McCain’s joins the melee in N.C. today to speak to the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce, where earmarks will certainly be discussed. McCain says some earmarked projects should still get funded, but the process itself has to end. “I can’t give you a justification for the corruption that’s been bred, which has sent members of Congress to federal prison.” [New York Times]

Top International Story: For the first time since the end of the Cold War, Russia will proudly showcase tanks and intercontinental ballistic missiles during a parade through the streets of Moscow. “Outgoing” president Vladamir Putin said the display is intended to highlight Russia’s renewed defense capacity. “We are capable of protecting our people, citizens, our state and our wealth.” [BBC]

Louisiana Dem. Don Cazayoux won a special election Saturday to pick up a Congressional seat that had been held by the Republicans for 33 years. As expected, Democrats pointed to the win as just the beginning of massive gains in the House come November. Obama backers added that it’s proof that attempts to tie local Dems to Rev. Jeremiah Wright (as a local ad aimed to do) won’t work. [Bloomberg]

Putting the “liberal” back in liberal arts, two dozen colleges now allow students to room with members of the opposite sex. From Brown to Penn to Oberlin, boys and girls are shacking up, but most swear there’s no hanky panky going on. One Oberlin student says she thinks of her boy roommate as a brother. “I’m really close to him, and I consider him one of my really good friends.” [USA Today]

Disney has released Miley Cyrus from its witness protection program. Welcome back, MC! [Daily Mail]
