If it’s Monday, it’s time for the Sunday Show Scorecard, CJP’s count of the Sundays Shows’ Jane quotients. The more the Janes, the higher the quotient. It’s so simple, yet….so difficult. Even though 55% of the voters are women, 55% of the people talking about politics on Sunday mornings are not. Let’s see how they did yesterday:
Tied for Last Place:
“Fox News Sunday”: FNS, so many men…so little love for the ladies. Govs. Bill Richardson and Ed Rendell kicked things off, and were followed by Larry Summers and Glenn Hubbard, who were followed by Brit Hume, Bill Kristol, Juan Williams and Jill Zuckman, who were capped off by a Power Player of the Week feature on Eli Manning. Eight men, one woman, one Jane and a lot of room for improvement.
“Face the Nation”: Bob Schieffer, bless your heart, you’re in last place again. BUT, you’re sharing the basement with your friends at Fox News Sunday, AND, at least you’ve broken your streak of having a female-free zone. Senators Lindsey Graham and Jack Reed were followed by a panel of Roger Simon, Doyle McManus and **Ana Marie Cox** from Time magazine. We’re excited for you, B.S., and firmly believe this is success you can build on. One woman, one Jane.
Tied for Second Place:
“This Week”: Sens Chuck Schumer, Jon Kyl and Chuck Hagel were followed by a roundtable with fellow Atlantan Cynthia Tucker, Jay Carney, Claire Shipman and George Will. Two women, two Janes.
“The Chris Matthews Show”: As usual, Chris Matthews had two Janes on his four-journalist panel. There’s so much to say for consistency. Clarence Page and John Heilemann were joined on set by Elisabeth Bumiller and Norah O’Donnell. Two of four= Two Janes.
First Place:
“Meet the Press”: We got an extra thrill this week to see two whip-smart Janes, Maria Bartiromo and Erin Burnett, carrying the water as MTP’s only two newsmakers on the economy. Add Peggy Noonan to the panel with Chuck Todd , Jon Meacham and Eugene Robinson, and you’ve got one very satisfied editorial team at CJP, three Janes and the winner this week!
The good news is that there were no shutouts- every show had a Jane on air. The bad news is that according to our sophisticated CJP algorithmic calculations, Janes only made up 29 percent of the guests on the Sundays this week. That’s down four percent from last week, but no matter. We remain unbowed, Janes. Come back next week to see who has more Janes, who has fewer, and who is getting remotely close to looking like the electorate when they talk about politics on Sunday.
