Ladies of the House: Rep. Lois Capps

    By CJP | March 18, 2008

capps.jpg For the first installment of our "Ladies of the House," series, we decided to speak with Rep. Lois Capps, Congresswoman from California and the co-chair (along with Rep. Cathy McMorris Rogers) of the bi-partisan Congressional Caucus for Women's Issues. As we told you last week, Rep. Capps came to Congress in 1998 under the worst of circumstances, when her husband of 37 years died and she filled his seat. Since then, the former nurse has been reelected four times, taken a leadership role in health care and environmental issues, and taken over half of the helm of the Congressional Caucus for Women’s Issues. When we caught up with Rep. Capps in her Capitol Hill office between votes, she told us about the "must pass" items on the caucus's agenda this year (women's heart disease, maternal mortality and addressing the effect of deployments on women in the military), whether it makes a difference to have a woman in charge of the House, and what's going through her mind as one of the mysterious "uncommitted superdelegates" in the Democrats' nominating process.
