    A Most Inspirational Jane

lonestar.jpg    As Janes across the country go to the polls, we pass along one of our favorite-ever notes from a cousin of the legendary Texas Congressman and Speaker of the House, Sam Rayburn.  Kate gives us her view of this hsrtoric election from her perspective as a member of a history-making Lone-Star family…

“Well, thank heavens for this website! As cousin of the late Sam Rayburn, Speaker of the US House of Representatives, I’ve been involved in politics all my life and I’ve not witnessed this much excitement in a very long time! The women of this country
need to get involved AND be heard!

“If we follow any of the Washington news, we may have the same cynical view of the gov’t that many people all over the world have. The main question now is: how our political system got to this point. How did we go from a small group of civil
servants binding together against monarchy and taxation without representation to a large federal gov’t spending our money the way they see fit, making decisions based on pressure from special interest groups and what will give them the most

probability of re-election. Many think the US gov’t’s problem is that it’s made up of people with disdain for their peers in the first place. Watch the presidential debates and the viewers know immediately that there is very little mutual respect between any of the candidates.

“We must ALL participate in elections if we are to be devoted to democracy. We must serve; we women must be good leaders as well as our male counterparts: enthusiastic, reliable, willing to help in any way we can in these elections. From childhood we are taught that morality should play a role in everything we do, but what about democracy? Democracy encompasses a multitude of ideas, but in respect to this discussion let’s acknowledge that stronger participation by the people equals a stronger gov’t and a stronger gov’t will lead to what this country’s founders stated in the Constitution in the first place:
democracy is gov’t for the people, by the people.

“This means US - ALL people! So, let’s ALL get out there and VOTE!”

    You heard her, Janes!
