Eyes & Ears: Report from our New Jersey Jane

    By CJP | February 4, 2008

megaphone.jpg Janes, say hello to our New Jersey Jane, Alicia Menendez, who brings us the view from the Garden State, also a Super Tuesday contender:

New Jersey is accustomed to being New York's neglected step-sibling, but this year, our fair state is getting a lot of attention. In the next two days, we'll be visited by three of the four major candidates: Clinton, Obama, and McCain.

Most polls from the last few weeks have shown Clinton ahead by double digits, but because our state hosts a proportional primary, Obama can still make significant delegate gains within the state, which means every last delegate counts.

Looking at the numbers in N.J., Clinton has maintained her lead, but the margin has tightened with each new poll. The latest Quinnipiac University poll of likely Democratic voters in NJ has Clinton leading Obama 48 percent to 43, with Clinton taking 54% of women and Obama winning 67% of Black voters' support. If these numbers hold, then tomorrow's results will be all about turnout.

Food for thought: With the Giants' Super Bowl win, they’ve scheduled a parade to celebrate the win. Will people in the tri-state area be too distracted by the parade to make their way to the polls? An endorsement from Eli Manning could be the deciding factor!
