    Monday Morning Jane

    By CJP | January 28, 2008

shopping1.jpg Good morning, Janes! If you think about the presidential race as a marathon, the candidates have all gotten the news that the free ride they thought they were getting at Mile Six isn't coming after all. Despite all history to the contrary, the blade-thin margin of both contests means that there will be no winner after Super Tuesday on February 5th. That's great news if you have loads of dough and just need to wait for your competitors to bleed out their cash. It's bad news if you were hoping that the American people would find your plucky charm so irresistible they would hand over the keys to the kingdom without so many nagging questions about where you stand on the "issues" and how you would do your "job." But Janes, if you're in it for the long haul, we are too. So here's our latest installment toward making you the smartest shopper on Aisle Six (produce and presidents). Here's your Morning Jane.... Top Domestic Story: Campaign 2008
    • Senator Ted Kennedy, Papa Bear of the Democratic Party, will endorse Barack Obama for president. Although the Clintons reportedly pressed the senator to remain neutral, he will campaign aggressively for Obama, including at a rally today, where he will be introduced by Caroline Kennedy. [New York Times]
    • Only two Republicans seem to want God as their co-pilot. No candidates except Mike Huckabee attended church in Florida on the last Sunday before the state's primary on Tuesday, while Rudy Giuliani, who is Catholic, attended synagogue and donned a yarmulke. [Miami Herald]
    • Despite an agreement among the Democratic campaigns not to campaign in Florida, Hillary Clinton went to Sarasota for two fundraisers and an impromptu press conference. Although the DNC stripped the state of its delegates for moving its election to Tuesday, a Clinton aide said, "It's wrong for any Democrat to send a message that the voters of any state don't matter." [AP]
Top International Story: A group of gunmen have freed 250 children whom they had taken hostage at a school in Pakistan. Members of the Pakistani Army and police surrounded the school, but the hostage-takers surrendered to local tribal leaders.  [BBC] President Bush will give his seventh and likely final State of the Union address in Washington tonight. Although he will allow for the need for more progress in Iraq and a better economy, he will boldly declare, "The state of our union is strong." [Washington Post] After doing time in Michael Vick's dog fighting ring, Hector the Pit Bull has been adopted in California, where he has developed a fondness for blankets at bedtime, peanut butter and Yo-Yo Ma. His new owner says, "He's turning out to be a man of high class and culture." [Washington Times]

Any help you could give us Janes on how exactly the delegate process works? Proportional vs Super Delegates? Can people switch their super delegate votes, etc? I’ve had lots of questions from folks and have trouble with a clear explanation!

      Obama Mama,

We confess that the delegate situation confuses us too, but not for long. Stand by for an interview with somebody important who can help us all figure it out. We’re on it!
