Women Playing Hardball with Chris MatthewsBy CJP | January 18, 2008 “The Washington Post” today reported on the controversy erupting over Chris Matthews, his comments stating that Hillary Clinton is where she is because Bill Clinton “messed around,” and his general approach to women on his show “Hardball.” On the one hand, we’ve heard him say things to his female guests, notably the all-female round table (that’s good) of Obama Girl, Hillary Girl and Giuliani Girl (that’s bad) several months ago, and we were left wondering if he’d ever seen fire or wheels or all the other cool things that have come along since dinosaurs roamed the earth. On the other hand, he consistently books his Sunday show full of D.C.’s smartest women. We’ve never seen a “Chris Matthews Show” without two of the four panelists being women, and we don’t have to send you to the Sunday Show Scorecard to know he’s the only man in Washington doing that. Also, his wife is one impressive Jane. So we’re at a loss, ladies. We don’t know what to make of Chris Matthews. After getting raked over the coals this week, Matthews apologized extensively for the Hillary Clinton comment on “Hardball” last night. He said he still thinks Clinton benefited from sympathy generated by the Lewinsky affair, but “was it fair to imply that Hillary’s whole career depended on being a victim of an unfaithful husband? No. And that’s what it sounded like I was saying.” Apology accepted? What do you think? |

Well, I happen to agree with Chris Matthews on this point about Hillary, though I tend not to like the man or his shows. I think Hillary did indeed benefit from sympathy after the Lewinsky affair, and I don’t think she’d be running for president today without it–nor would she have been able to become a senator, either.
