    Your Thursday Morning Jane

    By CJP | December 20, 2007

map.jpg Good morning, Janes! Do you have plans for a post-Christmas get-away? Will it be a mini-holiday in the tropics? Skiing in Sun Valley? Quiet time at home with your TiVo?

For our part, CJP is gearing up for the trip of a lifetime– January in Iowa! We’re living the dream, Janes, and you can too. Just get out your map, start throwing some darts, and get ready to be the smartest one in line at the passport agency. Here’s your Morning Jane…..

Top Domestic Story: Congress is going home for the year, having passed an energy bill, raised the minimum wage, and again funded the Iraq war with no strings attached. Rahm Emanuel (D-IL): “I’m not going to let a lot of hard work go unnoticed, but I’m not handing out party hats, either.” [Washington Post]

Top International Story: Vladamir Putin, the “outgoing” president of Russia, has been named Time Magazine’s Man of the Year for managing “an extraordinary feat of leadership in imposing stability on a nation that has rarely known it and brought Russia back to the table of world power.” Time also notes, “Putin is not a Boy Scout.” [Time]

The EPA has denied 17 states the right to set their emissions standards, saying that states must follow federal rules instead. California’s Attorney General called the decision “absurd,” but auto industry says its OK by them, saying, “We commend the E.P.A.” Hmmmmmm. [New York Times]

    Campaign ‘08:

    • Rudy Giuliani went to the hospital last night with flu-like symptoms and is headed home to NYC for some R&R. Diagnosis: Collapsing poll numbers. Cure: Unknown at this time. [Times Online]
    • Perhaps appealing to the I-don’t-want-my-kids-eating-lead-in-their-toys portion of the electorate, Barack Obama has joined Joe Biden in calling for a complete ban on all toys from China until their safety can be determined. CJP would call for children to play only with sock puppets, but all the socks are made in China too. [Union Leader]
    • Tom Tancredo, the Republican who made illegal immigration the center piece of his presidential bid, is likely to announce he’s dropping out of the race today. [Des Moines Register]

Maternity-wear designer Liz Lange has offered this great advice to Jamie Lynn Spears as she considers one of the many challenges of pregnancy- what to wear? “I think little cute dresses and jeans with tight-fitting tee shirts. …She’s 16, and I’d like to see her look her age.” [People]
